But at the 2023 Championships in Budapest, Černý had an entirely different reason for dropping to one knee. Having just completed the men’s 35km race, he waited near the finish line for his partner, fellow race walker Hana Burzalová, who was competing in the women’s event that started alongside his. Then, with the Budapest crowd erupting in cheers, she said “yes.”What followed was pure sporting romance: Černý punched the air in celebration, slid a ring onto her finger, and swept Burzalová into his arms as photographers captured the newly engaged couple in front of the world’s media.Speaking afterward, Černý revealed that the Olympics had partly inspired the timing of his proposal. “We have been together for almost one Olympic cycle, almost four years, so I think it was the right time,” he explained.For the record, both athletes also had plenty to celebrate on the sporting front. Černý clocked a personal best of 2:32:56 to finish 19th, while Burzalová secured a season’s best of 3:02:47 and placed 28th.As the resurfaced video reminds fans, championships may bring medals every two years, but magical moments like this truly last a lifetime.
